Junior Research Fellow of Applied Dialectology

In my dissertation, I study action nominal constructions with the suffix -mine (laulmine ‘singing’) and their nominal and verbal properties in Estonian dialects and in the Finnic language continuum in general. I am particularly interested in the modal and aspectual features of such constructions, but also in the structure, function and spread of -mine forms in spoken spontaneous language in comparison to written language.

Mirjam Ruutma, doctoral student

I am focused on studying adpositions in Estonian dialects. In my master’s studies, my main interest lay in ambipositions (i.e. adpositions that can occur as both pre- and postpositions), but in my dissertation, I am looking at the relationship between analytic adpositional phrases and the corresponding synthetic case forms in dialects. I am interested in their geographical distribution and intra- and extralinguistic factors, that influence the choice between the two parallel constructions.
